President’s Message

Dan BanderaJust months after launching an OSGi Internet of Things (IoT) expert group, we are moving strong into 2016 with IoT. The OSGi Alliance participated this week in its first-ever CeBIT appearance in Hannover, Germany. We demonstrated OSGi for IoT with the interactive IoT LEGO® train demo we introduced at the OSGi Community Event last fall, showing how simple it is to build, interoperate, run and change live services running in edge devices, gateways and the cloud using OSGi and OSGi enRoute.

The demo was featured in the Eurotech IoT Solutions & Partner space, stand E77 in Hall 13. If you are interested in helping us expand our OSGi IoT demo for the next demonstration at the OSGi Community Event 2016 in October, please contact Mike Francis. The demo has already been extended for CeBIT with Eclipse Kura, Eurotech DynaCOR and Eurotech ReliaGATE 10-20 gateways. We would like to thank members Eurotech, Paremus and ProSyst Software, as well as contributor iMinds, for providing the OSGi ecosystem IoT solution.

Also at CeBIT, Richard Nicholson, board member and Alliance past president, presented “Business & IoT – Economic Alchemy or Another Anticlimax?” on Tuesday March 15. The slides from this presentation are available online.

Meanwhile, the IoT expert group is proceeding with the technical work of defining the requirements and specifications needed to extend the role and value of OSGi in IoT.

Alliance members can provide requirements and contribute to specifications and reference implements, and the public can raise requirements using the bugzilla system (RFP 174). Please consider whether your organization can contribute and benefit from our IoT technical work. Contact Interim Chairman Tim Ward for more information on this relatively new expert group.

Our early IoT efforts have drawn three new members to the OSGi Alliance. We are pleased to welcome Huawei, Bitreactive and Eurotech as new members.

The OSGi Community Event in November 2015 was an ideal opportunity to interact with community members, showcase the OSGi IoT ecosystem demo and technical activities like the IoT EG, new specs and OSGi enRoute, and recognize contributions and leadership to the Alliance by naming Dr. Susan Schwarze an OSGi laureate. More than 600 people attended the event, which was co-located with EclipseCon Europe. I’m pleased to announce we will again co-locate our OSGi Community Event with EclipseCon Europe in 2016; mark your calendar for October 25-27, 2016, in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

I am excited to see 2016 unfold for the OSGi Alliance, and I encourage you to take full advantage of your participation benefits this year to get the greatest value from your membership and OSGi technology.
