NTT West provides telecommunications services in western Japan, including its flagship broadband connection service, FLET'S HIKARI, with 8 million subscribers. FLET’S Joint, an optional platform service for home ICT service providers, was launched in August 2011. In recent years, devices such as TVs, webcams and electrical power sensors have been connected to the home network. Before FLET’S Joint, service providers had to provide dedicated controllers for home security, home appliance and energy monitoring devices. Now, service providers use the platform to share gateways rather than dedicating controllers to each device. The platform consists of HGWs (residential gateways) and servers. The OSGi framework plays a key role in allowing service providers to deliver their functionality to residential gateways to control devices in the home. Based on the simple premise that IoT has no reason to exist without an internet connection infrastructure, we founded Gemino in 2010 to develop a software framework to manage the connectivity and protocols specifically designed to run on network processors. In order to provide the right level of hardware abstraction, openness to third-party and extendable software architecture, Gemino chose OSGi. OSGi allows service integration and sharing between software applications developed by third parties, and the capability to include protocols that really apply to all vertical implementations in a transparent way. The result is AGSuite, a single license software framework able to operate on DSL network processors for the new generation Smart Gateway for the IoT market. ...

Data in Motion Consulting has used OSGi technology for years as a foundation for a lot of different business sectors like Desktop Applications, Cloud Systems and Embedded Applications. We started using OSGi in the context of Eclipse RCP and moved to OSGi based servers from there. We appreciate the clean architecture it makes possible, avoiding boilerplate code and yielding well maintainable code in the end. This goes hand in hand with well-defined specifications driven by expert groups. It is important for our customers and us to rely on more than buzz-word-based technology. Modularity is another success factor of OSGi. We can use a module in an embedded device, as well as in desktop or middleware applications. Together with our experiences in Model Driven Software Development, we have a powerful package to create applications of any kind in any line of business or industry in a fast and reliable way. ...

IBM WebSphere Applications Server Liberty is a flexible, composable, lightweight Java application server, built for the Cloud and Microservices. It enables businesses of all sizes to rapidly build and deploy applications across a spectrum of on-premise and cloud deployments. OSGi’s robust and rich feature set made it a natural choice for WebSphere Liberty. Exploitation of OSGi is what enables the individual runtime features and configuration to be dynamically changed, all without requiring a server restart. WebSphere Liberty also makes it easy for customers to develop and deploy applications that exploit these same OSGi capabilities. We built WebSphere Liberty from the ground up on OSGi. It gives us, and our customers, the ability to deploy lean solutions from the smallest standalone Web application all the way up to a fully clustered, highly-available, Java EE compliant platform using a composable set of features. ...

CABA is a proud supporter of the OSGi Alliance due to its mission to develop and promote the universal adoption of middleware. A key objective of our organization is to promote the interoperability of applications and services, and the OSGi Alliance, as a sister organization, excels at this task. As a consequence, we are happy to commend the OSGi Alliance to our own member and to the industry-at-large in the building automation and connected home space for providing a platform for reducing industry complexity, through the provision of modular architecture for large-scale distributed systems, as well as small, embedded applications.

We founded Everit in 2008 with the goal of having an enthusiastic team and a perfect ecosystem for web development. We built a complete stack but got into a dead-end. We tried to create another stack but failed again. The system became a monolith; it was a pain to include any new customer request. We started our third stack in 2012, this time on top of OSGi. Four years later, we have 200+ OpenSource artifacts, and our system is still lightweight and flexible. OSGi taught us how not to overdesign our solutions, how to keep our modules simple and reusable.

Liferay has experienced the benefits of modularity first hand in converting completely to an OSGi standards-based application, including faster iterative development, feature delivery, and security resolutions. OSGi has helped Liferay enforce the boundaries of our different subsystems by connecting them through a simple and dynamic service base model. We are seeing teams grow independently and improve scalability with the foresight to visualize the end goal. These features allow the Liferay community to build applications faster and easier than ever before. More importantly, these changes empower developers within the Liferay Marketplace to contribute without replicating default behaviors within the platform. With OSGi, Liferay is able to bring the vision and passion of developers to the community quickly and easily to make a more positive impact.

We have been using OSGi since 2006 and our product, the Paremus Service Fabric, is built from the ground up using the latest OSGi Alliance specifications. Designed to address the fundamental issues that all Enterprise, Cloud and IoT edge face - reducing Operational complexity while increasing business Agility. Extremely simple to install on-premise or in public Clouds, the Fabric dynamically manages all runtime software and environmental dependencies. Its supportive of, but agnostic to, the software components you choose to use and it can also deploy, configure and manage non OSGi / Java components. A fully self-describing platform, the Service Fabric enables Agility while enhancing an organization’s Governance policies. IT trends come, IT trends go. The modularity, evolvability and maintainability advantages provided by the open Industry modularity standard that is OSGi provides Paremus with an on-going competitive advantage allowing us and our customers to adapt to whatever the future holds.
