OSGi Markets and SolutionsThe OSGi Alliance, a proven entity outside of the Java Community Process, has been creating Java specifications successfully for 10 years. Starting in 1999, the alliance targeted its specifications at the embedded Java and networked device markets, which successfully implemented and deployed devices in home and telematics environments, including product series from Bosch Siemens Home Appliances and BMW. In 2003, the alliance began expanding its specifications to accommodate the mobile device market, forming the Mobile Expert Group, which developed the mobile Java service platform that is referenced by JSR 232. Beginning in 2004, open source communities began to adopt OSGi technology. The significant interest in OSGi technology by open source communities is demonstrated by the Apache Felix project, the Eclipse Equinox project, Knopflerfish and more. And enterprise industry leaders are increasingly adopting OSGi technology, from current deployments by Siemens to future versions of IBM Lotus Notes and Workplace. The OSGi Service Platform is also considered to be the cheapest, fastest and easiest way to enable the dynamic deployment of Web 2.0 services and mashups in the next generation Java Service Platform. Diverse and new markets continue to implement and deploy products and solutions around the world: |
